Schools are places where children learn and interact with their peers. It also feels like a second home to them. But sometimes, kids often get nervous and anxious on their first day of school.
A second-grade school teacher named Diane Hill works at the Northern Hills Elementary School located in Onalaska, Wisconsin. She definitely loves her job and kept teaching for about 21 years.
Over her years of teaching, Diane noticed that some of her students experienced nervousness and a little bit of fear coming to class on their first day. She knew this could potentially affect her students’ behaviors and plans to incorporate a new idea in their classroom.
Teacher Diane has a four-year-old Golden Retriever named Davie, who is a certified therapy dog that senses and assists people in need of support and comfort. She thought it would be a great idea to introduce her to the students and help ease their anxiety on the first day.
When Davie first walked inside the classroom, the kids’ negative emotions suddenly lifted. She made a great impression on the students and every interaction with her made the learners feel loved and appreciated. They enjoyed every minute with her, putting a smile on Teacher Diane’s face.
Diane became impressed with Davie’s job that she brought her to school every day.
Davie being at school made Diane’s plan all worth it, especially for one kid. Skylar Davis is one of the second-grade schoolers who saw Davie comforting a child crying. When she sensed that the kid was outside, she immediately went out and helped her stop crying.
Another second-grade named Neveah Clancy mentioned that Davie treats and shows everyone with respect.
Davie’s assistance shows that a therapy dog is an excellent element for schools to adopt. She taught the children about empathy and lifelong learning while helping them with their issues. It’s truly a wonderful thing what dogs are capable of doing to their human friends.
