Sometimes we take for granted how smart our dogs are. We assume we can predict their behavior until they catch us off guard with their cleverness. Our expectations then need reevaluation.
Indeed, an unattended home invites a field day for dogs, depending on how well you train them. We often jokingly say to our dogs we’re going to get a camera to keep tabs on them. Probably a wise choice.
The only way to know what our dogs are doing when we aren’t with them is to monitor them. Moreover, it’s an opportune time to observe just how clever they are. And dogs can do it all.
Although the lurcher dog Red doesn’t have a home of his own yet, he’s got a paw up compared to his domestic counterparts in the art of revelry. Red leads a group of unruly dogs at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, a dog kennel in South East England.
This dog is an expert escape artist. As his name implies, he’s on the far end of the spectrum, and he’s got a little bit of a rebel in him. The staff at this shelter home is in shock after they install cameras to observe him and the other dogs.
Before observing Red, the shelter home has no cameras. Anne, one of the workers, mentions how overnight a few dogs manage to unlock their kennels. Then a dozen dogs escape their kennels and eat food from the kitchen.
When the staff returns in the morning, they notice Red with either his girlfriend or his two male friends in his kennel. The other dogs roam freely. The frequent recurrence of dogs outside their kennels prompts an inquiry.
After having a conversation about properly securing doors, Anne rules out the staff as being responsible. If anyone among them is, they are likely having a good laugh is all. She then inquires of a security guard, which leaves her scratching her head.
There is no one in the facility overnight who would be able to let the dogs out.
Set in the kitchen, hallway, and Red’s kennel, in particular, Anne hopes the cameras will identify the offender. Sure enough, no human is guilty. Instead, they catch Red red-handed.
Red unlocks the door and sneaks out of his kennel. First, he gets his fill of food from the kitchen. Then he proceeds to let loose his girlfriend, two best friends, and then the other dogs.
Red knows how to start a party, but his antics end once they discover he’s responsible. On the bright side, even though Red won’t host any more parties, he’s up for adoption. Surely his pals at Battersea will miss the late-night escapades.
