Many people have fantastic dog stories to share, but this is the time to recognize their good deeds in the form of the Animal Hall of Fame. The Purina Animal Hall of Fame honored over a hundred dogs in the last four decades. Meet the top five 2008 Purina Animal Hall of Fame Inductees.
Corey Saves The Day
Corey, a 14-year-old Miniature Schnauzer, went out for his daily walk with his owner, Jay Sobel, in North York, Ontario, when he sensed a faint cry from an unknown man 200 yards away. It turned out that the man was Jack Turner, an 80-year-old who fell into the cold water while checking his pool.
It was difficult for Mr. Turner to get out of the cold water due to his wet clothes and chronic emphysema. Thanks to the alert Corey, Sobel could pull Jack out of the water.
Although Jack got hypothermia, a mild heart attack, and badly scraped hands from desperation to get out of the cold water, he was able to receive treatment immediately. Ever since the accident, Corey and his owner would visit him during their daily walks in the street.
Peeka, The Savior
Ed and Lee Anderson’s dog, Peeka, a 5-year-old Lhasa Apso, barked nonstop due to the intense heat that reached over -29 degrees Celsius in Saskatoon in February. Peeka ceaselessly whined at the back door to get the couple’s attention.
When she convinced Ed to come to the door, he was shocked to see a newborn sleeping peacefully on the porch. Ed immediately brought the baby girl inside, and Lee, his wife, checked the newborn’s condition while he called the police. The baby survived the situation and fully recovered—thanks to Peeka’s persistent barking.
Freddie, The Tug-of-War Champion
Mike Hambling walked with his three-year-old German Shepherd near their cottage in Coldwater, Ontario. However, the ice gave way under Mike to plunge into the freezing water. His wife saw the incident but could not help her husband across the channel.
Mike almost passed out, trying to pull himself above the water, when he felt a sharp yank at his wrist from Freddie’s leash wrapped around him. Freddie dragged Mike out of the hole in the ice. Who would have thought that Freddie’s years of playing tug-of-war would be put to good use?
Mighty Maggie May
Maggie May, an eight-year-old Wheaten Terrier, saved her owner, Suann DeCourcey, from a deep sleep one afternoon in November when her house had toxic carbon monoxide.
Suann, deaf in one ear, awoke to find Maggie May on her chest, barking loudly and continuously licking her face. Maggie and her owner exited the house, and the Winnipeg Fire Department and gas company came to the rescue.
Missy, The Terrier Mix Service Dog of the Year
A lady adopted Missy, a Terrier Mix service dog, from the animal shelter. But Missy proved that she was more than a family pet. She became a service dog to Stephanie, who has epileptic seizures and panic attacks.
Missy’s “sick sense” was used one night in Ontario when her sharp senses convinced her to stay with Stephanie’s family friend, Barb Langley. Later that night, Barb called a friend over the phone, which sounded gibberish. Her friend was about to hang up when he heard Missy barking uncontrollably, which made him curious about Barb’s situation.
He rushed to Barb’s house only to find that she had a stroke. Barb’s friend did not waste time and immediately rushed her to a nearby hospital. Thanks to Missy’s sixth sense, Barb recovered from the tragic event.
