When a dog keeps getting returned to a shelter after getting adopted, it’s heartbreaking. Rescuers and shelters only want to find a home for every homeless animal. That’s why the last thing that they want to see is someone returning a dog. The following tale is about a dog named Abe, who experienced such an unfortunate event.
Abe was a puppy that was being fostered by an employee from The Dodo. Another employee, named John noticed him. John found out that Abe was frequently getting returned post-adoption for an unknown reason.
John wanted to find out why Abe couldn’t get a permanent home, so he took some time to learn more about the dog. He found out that Abe had a sister named Addie. They were both rescued from Puerto Rico, but only Addie got adopted.
One day Abe was set for his final adoption, and The Dodo employees threw a goodbye party for him. However, after a week, he got returned again. It was at that point that John took it upon himself to find out why that kept happening.
After John consulted with his girlfriend, they fostered Abe. They also changed his name to Bean. After a few days, he found out what Abe’s problem was. He knew it wasn’t going to be easy taking care of him.
Bean had destructive tendencies. The puppy had a lot of energy, and sometimes that energy is channeled into chewing items and furniture. Of course, John knew that this was something natural to puppy. He wanted to work through Bean’s issues.
When the pandemic hit, John had to move out of town. He went back to his parent’s home. His parents had two cats who had varying receptions towards the dog.
One cat named Tigger welcomed Bean. The other one, Simba, wasn’t so enthusiastic about his presence. Eventually, Tigger and Bean became very close.
John’s entire family loved Bean. He also helped boost the morale of John’s mother, who was suffering from breast cancer. He was the right companion to help her get through the healing process.
John and Bean’s story is an example of a bond built on second chances. Sometimes it doesn’t work out during the first few adoptions. But John proved that the previous adopters were wrong to let go of Bean.
