After twenty years of rescuing animals, Randy Grim still never got used to seeing beaten and battered animals during a rescue, and Champ topped the list as the most devastating dog he had ever seen.
Grim’s Animal Shelter in St. Louis, Missouri, often receives calls about emergency rescues for animals, and that day was no exception. A concerned citizen called about the Akita lying in the grassy field near a busy street.
When Grim saw the dog’s state, all muddy and bloody around its head and neck, his heart went out for the wounded dog. He softly crooned to the animal as he gently lifted him to bring him to an emergency vet’s office.
He named the dog Champ, telling the dog he would be his little Champ if it survived. Champ was placed in a medically induced coma due to the severity of his injuries. He would have had a slight chance of living if Grim had not come along to rescue him.
After a few weeks of treatment in the vet’s clinic, they released Champ to stay in Grim’s animal shelter for rehabilitation. Grim made sure to bring Champ to total health and find him a forever family.
Rescuers even fundraised to solicit donations on social media for Champ’s medical bills. They sold a ‘Fight Like Champ’ t-shirt, which fans and animal lovers lined up to buy.
The cause did not only benefit Champ, but also the other rescue dogs kept at Grim’s shelter. Completely healed, Champ finally moved into a loving family of his own.
Grim expanded his animal shelter a year later by saving more giant animals like horses, donkeys, pigs, and cows. All thanks to his compassion towards animals, big and small, the animal shelter, which they call Randy’s Rescue Ranch, continues to save maltreated animals and inspire many people to do the same.
