Technical Sergeant Dustin Cain’s first thought upon joining the United States Air Force was to become a military working dog handler. It didn’t take him long to accomplish his objective after working so diligently. Soon after, he traveled to Osan Air Base which is in South Korea, where he met Bakk, his first K9 partner.
As soon as the soldier met the dog, he knew they were destined to be together. They connected instantly and formed a really deep friendship. However, knowing that his mission would only last a year, he attempted not to become too connected to the dog.
Dustin acknowledged that being away from home was quite challenging for him. He desired to be with his children but was unable to. But with Bakk at his side, things were considerably easier to manage.
Dustin was relocated to Idaho shortly. He was thrilled to be reunited with his loving wife and two sons, but felt horrible about leaving Bakk behind. In his mind, though, he was aware that the German Shepherd would eventually return to him.
Approximately one year later, Bakk began limping after tearing a ligament on the job. At the age of seven, he was not an ideal surgical candidate. But despite all of his accomplishments, he was the perfect fit for Dustin’s home.
American Humane facilitated Bakk’s transportation to his new residence. He eventually arrived in Boise, Idaho, after a very long journey. No one informed him that he would be with his former handler, but he sensed he was about to meet a familiar face.
Dustin presented Bakk with a Kong and a toy rope as a homecoming gift. He was eager to see the dog again, but apprehensive because he did not know how it would behave around young children. All of Bakk’s concerns vanished, however, when he sat next to his 3-year-old son, Henry, with his Kong. He knew at that precise moment that everything would be wonderful, and he was absolutely correct.
Bakk currently spends his days playing with his human brothers and doing whatever he pleases. After having worked long hours in the past, he deserves to be a couch potato and do nothing but enjoy his life.
