Doc was a senior German Shepherd that was given up by his owners because of his inability to walk with his rear legs. He was on the list of dogs to be euthanized but luckily someone saw his potential.
Meeting Doc
McKenzie, a volunteer at the shelter, saw Doc and instantly felt sad for him. She instantly decided that she wanted to foster him and help him relearn how to walk. McKenzie and her fiancé, Grant, had no idea how to take care of a special needs dog but were determined to do whatever they could.
They saw how protruded Doc’s spine was so decided to take him to a veterinarian. Unfortunately, the vet diagnosed Doc with Degenerative Myelopathy, a spine disease, and suggested that the couple should humanely euthanize him. The couple was emotional but ultimately, agreed with the vet and saw it as the best course of action.
They didn’t want to remember Doc’s last day full of clinics and the vet so they scheduled the euthanizing for the next day. The couple then bought a lot of food as well as some new toys for Doc.
As they got home, they prepared a picnic for Doc in their yard. The couple sat there admiring Doc for a few minutes before McKenzie got a crazy idea.
McKenzie told Grant to hoist Doc’s rear end using a towel as a harness to make Doc remember what it was like to walk. Surprisingly, the couple saw how Doc tried to move his back legs which gave them hope that he could walk again.
A walk to remember
The couple was thrilled to see that Doc had control on his back legs. McKenzie called the vet, canceled the euthanizing, then continued to help and train Doc to walk.
McKenzie and Grant trained Doc for a few weeks and saw noticeable changes. Doc was able to sit himself up and take a few steps using his back legs.
Thanks to the couple and their never-ending support and love for Doc, the dog learned how to stand and run on his own. McKenzie and Grant were happy to give a chance to give Doc a fruitful and active life.
