All dogs deserve proper shelter, care, treatment, and attention, especially when pregnant. This, however, was different for this Pit Bull named Blue. Blue, who lived much of her life with a chain around her neck, was pregnant and was chained up to a tree when found by a volunteer at Real Time Rescue, a dedicated animal welfare organization.
The volunteer who found Blue knew she had to take action after assessing Blue’s condition. She negotiated with Blue’s owners to give her up for rescue, and she was delighted when they agreed. She freed Blue from being chained, put a leash on her, and brought her to the vet’s office.
Blue had her maternity suite at the vet’s office, just the perfect setting for her to enter labor. The entire room was for her use, with blankets and everything to keep her comfortable. After three days, she started going into labor, and what happened next surprised everyone at the vet’s office.
Blue gave birth not just to five puppies, the average litter size for Pit Bulls, but to 13 puppies, later named The Lucky 13. Indeed, they were the luckiest because one foster home agreed to take them all in, including Blue, at once. Cynthia, the dogs’ foster mom, couldn’t be happier to be taking care of them because she felt the need to help Blue the first time she saw her.
Cynthia started a co-parenting flow with Blue, set up a large bed for them, and gave each puppy a color-coded collar for easy identification. She had no regrets about taking them in because they were so sweet, affectionate, and well-behaved. She felt a roller coaster of emotions when she sent them to their forever homes, but she knew they’d all be in good hands.
Today, there are 14 Pit Bulls scattered in some of the world’s most loving and sweet forever homes. Blue and her puppies are forever grateful to the volunteer who released her from her life on a chain.
