Sunshine, a Terrier mix, endured several months of hardship on the streets of Los Angeles. She spent time in different locations until she landed in a schoolyard over the summer. She judged it to be the safest place to stay because there were no people around.
The dog did not want to be around humans, so she made the prudent decision to seek safety on campus. Soon, though, the students would return, and she would be compelled to seek refuge elsewhere. So, before that could occur, Brenda, a Good Samaritan, decided to assist the dog.
Brenda sought assistance and ultimately contacted Eldad and Loreta of the Los Angeles-based rescue organization Hope For Paws. She provided them the address of the school, and the rescuers promptly set out to get the dog.
They did not see Sunshine on-site, but something indicated that she was still present. Within minutes of searching the area, Loreta discovered Sunshine hidden in the bushes. While it complied with her request, it did not allow her to get too close. It maintained its distance and fled whenever she moved closer.
The three individuals pursued the dog and prevented it from hiding under the shipping container. Loreta caught it with a snare after some time. What first appeared to be a successful rescue attempt turned out to be far from over.
Sunshine fought back and nearly eluded capture. Even with two traps in place, she refused to give up. She chewed off one of the snares, prompting Loreta to dash back to the car to retrieve a metal one. She had three snares strung around her, but she attempted to escape nevertheless.
The rescuers quickly placed Sunshine in a transport container, from which she continued to try to escape. She did not instantly see that it was the beginning of a new chapter in her life. But she eventually did and realized that the humans meant no harm.
With the assistance of a kind and understanding foster family, Sunshine made a full recovery. She gradually overcame her phobias and started to trust humans again. And soon, she was ready for a forever home.
