What comes to your mind when you hear “no man is an island”? This famous quote implies that humans are social beings who need help from other human beings to survive.
Well, this well-known expression applies not only to humans but also to dogs! A senior pug named Augie and his best friend, Pepe, the chihuahua, are inseparable, and here’s why.
Augie is a 12-year-old blind dog who has always counted on his seeing-eye buddy, Pepe, through thick and thin. Just last year, they lost their only home after it was determined that their owner had a terminal illness. To make matters worse, Augie was also diagnosed with several health issues.
Fortunately, Colorado Pug Rescue came to the rescue and took care of the duo. They were given a foster home together, and Pepe did everything to make Augie comfortable every step of the way.
Cyndi Trimber, the pair’s foster mom, describes Pepe as an excellent support dog to his senior brother. He guides Augie during walks and even provides emotional assistance when things go wild.
On one of their routine check-ups, they found out that Augie had a heart murmur. It wasn’t life-threatening, but then they discovered that he had mild pneumonia. Luckily, the pup pulled through after taking antibiotics and medicine.
After his recovery, Augie was then scheduled for major eye surgery. Although he could no longer see, the pressure in his eyes caused a lot of pain, so they had to be removed. The pup underwent surgery last January, and everything went well!
It doesn’t end there — Augie then had to have all his 14 teeth removed due to decay, which comes with old age. Thankfully, Pepe was with him every step of the way, making the senior pup’s healing process easy.
With his high spirits and lively disposition, you won’t be able to tell that Augie has gone through a lot. He is an active dog who still has lots of energy in him! Thanks to Pepe, the senior pup is living his best life.
Right now, the two are still waiting for the perfect family that would adopt them both. Watch Augie and Pepe in the video below.
