Wobbler’s syndrome is a neurodegenerative disorder that causes a dog’s limbs to become immobile. The disease is frequently seen in giant dog breeds. Compression of the nerve roots is a defining feature of the condition. And when this happens, the brain will be unable to send “messages” to the body, resulting in paralysis of the limbs.
This is exactly what happened to Athena, a Doberman belonging to a newlywed couple. Sadly, Doberman pinchers, Rottweilers, Irish Wolfhounds, basset hounds, and Great Danes are prone to Wobbler’s syndrome.
The newlyweds have just returned from their wonderful honeymoon. But when they did, they soon discovered that Athena had become helpless and immobile and it changed their lives quickly.
They quickly took their beloved dog to the veterinarian, who informed them that Athena was ill. The pair was also informed that Athena’s prognosis was grim. If she was unable to walk or move her limbs after three months, she would likely never walk again.
The pair promptly assumed responsibility for the care of their pet Doberman. They were committed to restoring her health. But as the months passed, Athena’s condition did not improve. However, after four months a miracle occurred – Athena defied all odds.
This pair clearly cherished and cared for their beloved pet. They showered her with affection and embraces whenever she needed them. The couple’s determination to assist Athena survive her illness culminated in Athena’s complete recovery.
What a lovely tale of love and affection! There is much to learn about this family as they clearly showed that nothing and no one could convince them to surrender and abandon one another.
Despite being diagnosed with Wobbler’s syndrome, I can only imagine the joy they all felt when Athena took her first step. The odds were surely stacked up against her but she persevered because she knew that her family was always there to support her.
